Why Sustainability Remains a Core Business Imperative Even as Political Momentum Wanes Across the U.S. and Europe

Responsible companies are not stepping back. They may adjust the messaging. They may slow the timeline. But the direction remains the same.

Sustainability is losing political ground. But not business relevance. Last year, we were asked to find a Chief Sustainability Officer. It was a clear priority (we found an excellent one, by the way 😉). Climate action was at the top of every board agenda. New EU regulations were landing. Pressure was high.

Shifting terrains

Fast‑forward to this year and the landscape feels different:

  • U.S. – ESG has become a polarising term.
  • Europe – Several regulations are delayed or softened.
  • Belgium – Sustainability barely registers in electoral debate.

What we’re seeing on the ground

Responsible companies are not stepping back. They may adjust the messaging. They may slow the timeline. But the direction remains the same. Why? My hypothesis is that they know sustainability is not just about image or compliance.

  • Staying relevant – Markets and stakeholders expect measurable climate action.
  • Attracting talent – Top professionals gravitate toward firms with clear sustainability goals.
  • Building resilience – Sustainable practices underpin business models that can weather rapid change.

The Executive Search role in keeping sustainability alive

We don’t claim to have every answer. What’s clear, however, is that in a world of shifting priorities, some commitments—like genuine sustainability—should remain steadfast. As executive search professionals, I believe our role is to keep the conversation alive.

  1. Challenge the news cycle — We push clients to look beyond headlines and maintain long‑term commitments.
  2. Present substance over buzzwords — Candidates we recommend understand the real business impact of sustainability, not just LinkedIn phrasing.
  3. Shape balanced leadership teams — We help assemble groups that can juggle pressure, values, and vision.
  4. Coach internal talent — We assess and develop existing leaders who can champion sustainability from within.
